We advise to allow 24 hours after the re-grouting is completed before a shower is used to ensure the new grout has had sufficient time to seal and dry properly.
Here are three categories of grout to choose from:
Sanded grout: is ideal for large grout joints – mostly used on large outdoor tiled areas such as balconies – except for marble which sanded grout will scratch.
Unsanded grout: is ideal for smaller grout joints.
Epoxy grout; is ideal for shower floors, bathroom floors, kitchen floors and splashbacks.
A whitish residue on grout is typically caused by efflorescence. Efflorescence is the result of soluble salts or minerals that dissolve in water and come to the surface during evaporation. Efflorescence can come from moisture coming up through the cement slab or from the mortar itself.
Efflorescence can also occur when the water used to mix grout has a high mineral content.
Over time, the tile and grout will fade away, get discoloured and start to wear slowly with the years of dirt and grime build-up. There are marks, stains and tints so deeply embedded which the normal household cleaners will not be able to take off. Also, professional cleaners have professional products and equipment with which they can perform tile and grout cleaning effectively.
A bit of additional care needs to be taken for ceramic and tiles and grouts. A non-acidic cleaner should be used. If the grout is a bit too dirty, then mildly acidic cleaner should be used to remove stubborn stains. It must be cleaned with water afterwards and then sealed again for protection.
